Stachybotrys chartarum (also known by its synonym Stachybotrys atra) is a greenish-black mold. It can grow on porous material, such as fiberboard, drywall, paper, dust, ceiling tiles, wood and lint. Growth occurs when there is constant long term moisture from water damage, excessive humidity, water leaks, condensation, water infiltration, or flooding.
There are several molds that look similar to toxic black mold. If you find what you think might be Stachybotrys the only way you can tell for sure is to have a mold expert take an air sample and look at the sample under a microscope.
All molds should be treated the same with respect to potential health risks and removal. The more serious health problems have been associated with the toxic black mold, Stachybotrys atra.
